Affix Music was lucky enough to catch up with vocalist Ruby Velle and keyboardist/producer Spencer Garn from Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics at the 2013 Park Tavern Oysterfest. Check out Part I of our interview where Ruby & Spencer discuss what it means to be an ‘independent artist.’
BIO Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics are a
funk, soul, and R&B group based out of Atlanta, GA, and have been a slick
addition to the local Atlanta scene since early 2008. Lead female vocalist Ruby
Velle, is backed by a solid lineup, including a three piece horn section
(trumpet, baritone sax, tenor sax) and rhythm section (B3 organ, electric
guitar, bass and drums). Since emerging on the scene, the band has
performed at some of the Atlanta areas best known venues and events for live
music including The Earl, Smith’s Olde Bar and The Woodruff Art Center.
In September 2012 The Soulphonics
released their full-length debut album, It’s About Time.
The album ranked in the top 30 on the Billboard Heatseeker chart and made
it into Jim Farber’s (of the New York Daily News) top ten. The albums
lead off single, “Me Dear” was a featured iTunes single of the week,
leading to 200,000 single digital downloads, 1200 full albums downloads, and
landing the band the #4 spot on iTune’s R&B Chart.
Ruby Velle &
The Soulphonics show no signs of slowing down in 2013. In February they
were a Delta airlines featured artist as well as Amazon.com’s Artist of the
Month. If you missed their showcase at SXSW this year, you can catch them
at the 26th Sould Summit in Chicago (April) or at the Governers Ball Music
Festival in NYC (June).
